MILAN JOSHI, MD - President
Dr. Milan Joshi is the co-founder and president of our practice. Dr. Joshi completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and University. He is board-certified in adult psychiatry. He began the practice in 1981 and has developed the practice into one of the most respected group psychiatric practices in the Baltimore-Washington area. Dr. Joshi specializes in mood and anxiety disorders. He has hospital affiliations with several local area hospitals and is on the faculty at Johns Hopkins. He also speaks on behalf of most major pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Altaf Merchant is one of the original partners of the practice. He also trained at Johns Hopkins and is board-certified in adult psychiatry. Dr. Merchant has extensive experience treating patients in a variety of settings to include outpatient, inpatient and partial hospitalization.

She completed her psychiatry residency at the University of Louisville, KY and subsequently completed her fellowship training at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, NY. She is board-certified in adult psychiatry and is currently board eligible for addiction psychiatry. While in residency she received the “Outstanding Resident in Community Psychiatry” award. She has several publications, poster presentations and grand rounds presentations. She has experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Her interests include substance abuse treatment, medication assisted treatment and dual diagnosis. She is fluent in Hindi and English.


Ms. Williams is a board-certified nurse practitioner. She graduated from the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing where she specialized in treating disorders across the lifespan. Following that, she trained with Dr’s Joshi & Merchant before joining their practice in 2008. She received her undergraduate nursing degree from the College of Notre Dame. She has over ten years of psychiatric experience as a registered nurse in a variety of settings including work at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Her interests include medication management, working with families and empowering individuals to reach their fullest potential.

Praveena Gadam is a certified physician assistant. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology and biology from the University of Michigan. She received a masters of public health in epidemiology from Boston University and a masters in Physician Assistant Studies from Towson University. She worked as a PA in internal medicine for approximately 8 years and then joined the practice of Joshi and Merchant in August of 2017. Her primary focus is in medication management for the treatment of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. She enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.

Betsy Christenson is a certified Physician Assistant. She got her undergraduate degree in psychology from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She then earned her Masters of Arts in Clinical Psychology from the University of Northern Iowa. She practiced for 3 years at a psychiatric rehabilitation program before returning to school to earn her Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Towson University. After graduation, she worked for 7 years in a small internal medicine practice before returning to a focused mental health environment at the office of Joshi & Merchant in February 2018. Her primary focus is on improving the quality of life for people with mental health issues through appropriate medication management. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two young daughters.


Ms. Cimonetti is a licensed clinical professional counselor and a registered nurse. She has over twenty-five years of progressive experience providing counseling services in hospital, day treatment and outpatient settings. She received her Masters in pastoral counseling from Loyola University. Her private practice work is with adults and adolescents.

Ms. Collins is a licensed clinical social worker providing therapy services to our adult patients utilizing a holistic approach. She attended University of Maryland and received a BA degree in psychology and a Master's degree in clinical social work. She has a wide breadth of experience within different arenas including private, not-for-profit, community and university settings.
